Structural Integrity renewal and repair works Phase 1 & 2 - RSH

The infrastructure, which services the hospital with steam and other main services lies beneath one of the principal road accesses of the hospital. It was established that severe breakdown of the structure between the road and the service ducts were in severe decay and in fear of collapse.

An immediate emergency plan was implemented to assess the whole structure to ensure that we could clearly identify all risks. In addition it was essential for a recovery plan to be put in place without delay.

Alterego Consultancy promptly proceeded to combine forces with structural professionals in establishing a strategy, which would be suggested to the Trust board of Shrewsbury and Telford Health Board.

Difficulties existed within the following areas:

  • Severe flooding within ducts
  • Structural integrity
  • Asbestos
  • Inadequate lighting

A full feasibility study was produced to the trust board with suggestions, which included the request for immediate action to be put in place, which included:

  • Traffic Management
  • Implementation of speed and load restrictions
  • Coordination of vehicle deliveries
  • Sign management
  • Temporary structural support to ducts

The main repairs involved a £3 million strategy, which could be implemented during a phased approach, which would reduce operational impact to the hospital.
